US says Canada dumped paper, imposes import duty - Reuters

Reuters is reporting that the US Commerce Department announced on Tuesday that preliminary findings in their investigation into Canadian groundwood paper and allegations of illegal market dumping. 

Key highlights:

  • Dept. of Commerce imposes duties of up to 22.16% on specific Canadian paper products bound for the US.
  • The antidumping duties are less than those sought by the Washington state petitioner, the North Pacific Paper Company.
  • The final decision will not be until at least August 2nd.
  • The investigation was originally announced last August.
  • The investigation alleges that Canadian groundwood products used for newspapers were dumped at below-market rates into the United States.
  • Canadian companies are being accused of receiving unfair subsidies.
